What’s so good about a domain?

You should seriously consider purchasing your own domain name if you run a website. A domain name is a website address that looks like “google.com” or “netjelly.com” which can be used in an address bar to gain access to your site.

Note: You don’t have to be a company or organization to register a domain name. Any person can do it!

Huge benefits to having a domain.

• Respect, it’s true. A domain name like “netjelly.(WEBHOSTHERE).com” wouldn’t build as much credibility / trust with you visitors. You find it almost impossible for people to purchase a product or service that you are providing because you didn’t want to spend a small fee on a domain name.

• If you ever decide to change web host, you can have your domain go with you. This will allow your past visitors or customers who knew that your web address was netjelly.com (for example) wouldn’t have to be informed of a URL change. They would simply have to type in domain name and be bought to your new site without giving you the hassle of tracking them all down and telling them.

• Money, Money, Money! When it comes to wanting to make some revenue from advertisers it would almost be a must to register a domain name, no respectful advertiser would buy web space on your site without one. Trust me.

• A domain name is pretty cheap if you think about the real benefit you are gaining from it. When you register your domain name from a registrar it will normally range from 10$-40$ for 1 year, then you will need to renew it as the year ends if you’re still interested in using it.

Stuff to Keep in Mind

Face it now, before you race off to the registrar hoping for the best darn domain ever. Most simple words, product names, and many other things are taken.

While registrar’s make a small amount of money off of the 10$-40$ from you, the people making the real money are domain sellers. Domain sellers will try to find rare and desired domains on upcoming products or current companies looking for them then sell them for thousands and even sometimes millions of dollars.

With that in mind NEVER go on an open community forum or discussion hall asking if people like this domain you came up with, because if it’s not already taken and it’s a good one someone will buy it up.

Be wary of some web hosting companies offering to pay for the domain fee for you.

This is normally a tool used by large commercial web hosts in order to get you to comment to service plans and then tie your domain name in with their company, sometimes then ordering you to pay larger fees to renew your domain name.
